A private school has reviewed its policies on safeguarding pupils after a maths teacher was jailed for grooming a 15-year-old girl.

Dr John Wunderle, 35, was employed as a maths teacher at £15,000 a year Bancroft’s in High Road, Woodford Green before being suspended in June when he was caught half-dressed by the pupil’s parents in her bedroom.

He was jailed for four years and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday after previously pleading guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child.

The intimate relationship started earlier this year but he had been offering private tuition in preparation for the girl’s GCSE’s at her home since September 2013.

He admitted to having sex with the teenager between March and June this year, two counts of sexual touching and one count of kissing.

The school has taken measures to update its safeguarding policies in light of the events and headteacher Mary Ireland has promised it will never happen again.
